MEXICO: ‘Ley Bonilla’ reaches supreme court
A contentious law approved by the Baja California (BC) state legislature extending the governor’s term by three years will be analysed by Mexico’s supreme court (SCJN). The law has been challenged by opposition parties, which complain that it is unconstitutional and represents an attempt by the nationally ruling Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) to tighten its grip on power in BC illegally and undermine democracy. This has once again heightened the political tensions between Morena and the opposition. By ruling on the case, the SCJN will set an important legal precedent on its relations with state governments but it also risks wading into a potentially damaging political dispute.
