Guatemala’s Cicig shuts its doors

The mandate of the United Nations (UN)-backed anti-impunity commission in Guatemala (Cicig) ended on 3 September 2019 after 12 years in the country. Its call for President Jimmy Morales, along with other top officials, to be investigated over allegations of illegal campaign financing, a hostile legislature (where many of the deputies themselves faced the prospect of being investigated), together with the loss of support from the US government, Guatemala’s dominant political and economic ally, combined to seal its fate. Here we review its achievements, the reasons for its closure, and the challenges ahead.
