CHILE: Piñera gropes for political solution to social crisis

With the concessions offered by President Sebastián Piñera failing to appease the demonstrators that have been mobilising in Chile for the past fortnight [WR-19-42] in rejection of social and economic inequality in the country, the government and Chile’s political class are under considerable pressure to usher in major changes to try to resolve the crisis. The political opposition has seized on the opportunity provided by the crisis to insist on the drafting of a new constitution to replace the document approved during the military dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990). They argue that this is necessary to deliver the sort of transformational economic, political, and social change demanded by the protesters. Piñera and the ruling centre-right Chile Vamos coalition, however, are apprehensive about this.
