From non-alignment to US ally

Guyana’s relations with the United States, and the West in general, have not always been smooth. For the PPP, and its Indo-Guyanese supporters, there is the long-held folk memory that the US, with British support, enabled the PNC to come to power after the pre-independence election of 1964 despite the fact that the PPP received more votes. The PPP under Cheddi Jagan was seen as pro-communist.
