PARAGUAY: Cartistas complicate life for Abdo Benítez

As protests spread like wildfire across the region, Paraguay’s President Mario Abdo Benítez is fearful that his government could be next to feel the heat. Abdo Benítez, who recently accused some members of the opposition of “wanting to see blood on the streets” to fulfil their political ambitions, is trying to ramp up investment in infrastructure in the apparent hope of staving off potential popular protests. But Honor Colorado, the faction of the ruling Asociación Nacional Republicana-Partido Colorado (ANR-PC) loyal to Abdo Benítez’s rival former president Horacio Cartes (2013-2018), is showing no sign of humouring his paranoia.
