HONDURAS: Contentious penal code postponed

The Honduran congress recently voted to delay by six months the entry into effect of the country’s new criminal code – meaning it will now take effect in May 2020. While hailed as a victory of sorts by civil-society groups, who have long warned that the new code would signal a significant setback in anti-impunity efforts, it comes amid other major concerns regarding corruption following the conviction last month of President Juan Orlando Hernández’s brother, Juan Antonio ‘Tony’ Hernández, for drug-related crimes which implicate the ruling Partido Nacional (PN) and the President himself.
