Lacalle Pou in pole position to win Uruguay’s elections

The last men standing in Uruguay’s long electoral campaign traded blows in a two-hour televised debate on 13 November. Neither Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou of the centre-right Partido Nacional (PN, Blancos) nor Daniel Martínez of the ruling left-wing coalition Frente Amplio (FA) landed a knockout punch. But the pressure was on Martínez to put his rival on the ropes. Two electoral polls published shortly before the debate gave Lacalle Pou a decisive lead over Martínez ahead of their second-round showdown on 24 November.
