CHILE: New constitution now on the cards

The Chilean government led by President Sebastián Piñera has accepted that drafting a new constitution can provide a way out of the country’s current crisis stemming from the public protests in rejection of social and economic inequality that have been raging for three weeks now. Drawing up a new constitution to make Chile’s political and economic model more equal and fair has become the most salient demand of the political opposition and the protest movement [WR-19-44]. The government’s decision to acquiesce to this demand is seen as a positive step that could help dispel the crisis. However, there are still disagreements among political leaders over the mechanism for drafting a new constitution, which threatens to delay the process as the damaging protests continue.
