Cocaine production still rising in Peru

Peruvian authorities have warned that despite their successful efforts to stem the spread of illegal coca plantations, the amount of cocaine being produced in Peru and the other Andean coca producing countries (Colombia and Bolivia) continues to rise. This suggests drug traffickers are able to produce more cocaine even though the amount of illegal coca plantations is no longer on the rise, signalling a problem for the global fight against cocaine trafficking. It makes it more difficult to accurately calculate the amount of potential cocaine production based on the area under coca cultivation and underlines the need for coordinated cross-national measures to be adopted to increase the eradication of illegal coca plantations in Peru and other Andean coca producing countries.
