COLOMBIA: Duque seeks dialogue to defuse discontent

Faced with the largest anti-government protests since he assumed office last year, Colombia’s President Iván Duque has been forced to call for dialogue with the various civil society organisations that have been taking part in the demonstrations. Duque’s hope is that this will help to ease social discontent and allow his government to prevent the protests from escalating further and threatening national stability, as has recently been the case in Ecuador and Chile. But, much like there, it is unclear whether the Duque administration can offer enough concessions in this dialogue process to satisfy the wide-ranging demands of protesters.
