Opening gambit

López Obrador’s first actions following his electoral victory involved matters of symbolic importance in terms of combatting corruption and curbing abuses by public officials–one of the campaign issues that most resonated with the electorate. Thus, even before he was sworn into office, his party approved several legislative bills to cut public servants’ salaries, scrap former presidents’ pensions and other benefits, remove immunity from prosecution for public officials, and strengthen the public consultation mechanism.
