Mexico: López Obrador’s First Year

Outlook

After more than 10 months in office, there is no indication that López Obrador will alter his government plans or style. He has upheld the vast majority of his decisions, even though some of them were not widely supported or were of dubious legality, claiming that he is following the will of the people, or that existing legislation that may have prevented a particular course of action is immoral or unacceptable. Within this framework, López Obrador is likely to continue resorting to a polarising rhetoric where those that criticise or reject his decisions – whether they are domestic or international voices – are accused of having vested interests in maintaining the status quo.
