Teachers’ strikes continue to paralyse education in Venezuela

The 2018-2019 academic year in Venezuela concluded in July in a state of catastrophe, with students missing at least 60 days – or 30% – of the school year, and some pupils in rural areas able to attend for an average of just one day a week. Despite these gaps in the school calendar, pupils were promoted to the next school year, and are continuing their studies for the academic year 2019-2020 as though nothing were amiss. It does not look like this year’s attendance figures will be any better.
