* The latest instalment of the monthly poll of leading business executive conducted by Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) shows that overall business confidence fell in December 2019 compared to the same month in 2018. Confidence in the retail sector fell by 3.1 points to 49.8 units, confidence in the manufacturing sector fell by 1.6 points to 48.6 units, and confidence in the construction sector fell by 0.9 points to 48.9 units. Confidence in all sectors is thus below the 50-unit mark, which denotes an optimistic outlook. Business confidence has been trending down in Mexico since President
Andrés Manuel López Obrador assumed office in December 2018 and the poll results are negative for the López Obrador government, which has called for an increase in private sector investment this year to revitalise domestic economic growth after it flatlined in 2019.
