CHILE: Piñera continues to grapple with social crisis

The New Year has started in Chile in the same vein as the final months of 2019, with regular street protests in rejection of social inequality and the government’s poor handling of the discontent. President Sebastián Piñera has also maintained his strategy of offering all sorts of concessions aimed at addressing some of the demands of protesters but refusing to assume responsibility for his administration’s role in the heavy-handed repression of the demonstrations and its failure to restore public order. With the turmoil impacting on Chile’s economy, Piñera is yet to discover a way out of the crisis and risks losing the support of even more sections of society.
