URUGUAY: Lacalle Pou seeks to make his mark

With just under two months to go until he takes office on 1 March, Uruguay’s president-elect Luis Lacalle Pou faces a long transition process. He has promised that his government, a ‘multi-colour’ five-party coalition led by his centre-right Partido Nacional (PN, Blancos), will be one “of action” following 15 years of leftist Frente Amplio (FA) rule. He has accordingly begun laying the groundwork for this, as shown by the contents of a phone conversation he held with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on 6 January.
