MEXICO: EZLN challenges López Obrador

The Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional (EZLN) leftist indigenous insurgent group used its customary New Year’s declaration to reiterate its opposition to the ‘Tren Maya’ railway project being advanced by the government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and to question his professed commitment to respect and uphold the rights of Mexico’s indigenous communities. This is a challenge for López Obrador, who is keen to maintain the support of indigenous groups and his image of being on the side of the poor and disadvantaged and determined to deliver a project that he deems key for the country’s economic development.
