PANAMA: Cortizo outlines priorities for 2020

At the start of the year, Panama’s President Laurentino Cortizo gave his six-month balance sheet in which he identified two key priorities for 2020 – the economy and security. The two issues featured as leading electoral concerns and priorities for the Partido Revolucionario Democrático (PRD) government which took office in July last year. The need to address security assumed particular importance after a deadly shoot-out in the La Joyita prison, outside Panama City, made headlines at the end of last year, resulting in the sackings of the director and deputy director of the prison system, Walter Hernández and Luis Gordón, respectively.
