In brief: Brazil’s 2019 inflation closes above target

*Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has reported that the national inflation rate closed 2019 at 4.31%, just above the 4.25% target set by the central bank (BCB). The 2019 year-end inflation rate was the highest since the 6.29% registered in 2016. The higher-than-expected year-end inflation result came on the back of a 1.15% increase in the monthly inflation rate in December 2019, the highest inflation for the month since 2002.
