In brief: Ecuador’s Mirador mega-mine sends first export to China

* Ecuador’s ministry of energy and non-renewable natural resources has announced that the large-scale Mirador mine has sent its first export of copper concentrate to China. The 22,000-tonne (t) shipment of copper concentrate has a value of approximately US$25m and marks a new milestone in the development of Ecuador’s large-scale mining industry, the ministry said in a statement. The Mirador mine, located in Ecuador’s southernmost Zamora Chinchipe province and operated by Ecuacorriente (a subsidiary of Chinese consortium CRC-Tongling Nonferrous Metals), began copper operations in June 2019 and is expected to generate over US$36bn in ore exports over the next 30 years. Prior to the first copper concentrate export being carried out, the Ecuadorean state received the last delivery of anticipated royalties from Ecuacorriente, for a value of US$15m.
