Embarrassing episode for Ecuador’s Moreno

Ecuador’s President Lenín Moreno celebrated the strengthening of bilateral economic ties and cooperation with the US on 13 January after meeting the head of the US National Security Council’s Western Hemisphere Affairs directorate, Mauricio Claver-Carone. Moreno provided no further details, but it was noteworthy that his comments followed just days after Ecuador’s ambassador to the US, Francisco Carrión, revealed that he had resigned over the lack of a signed agreement with the US regulating its counter-narcotics and surveillance flights which have been conducted over Ecuadorean territory since September 2018.
