PARAGUAY: Crisis accelerates political battle for Asunción

November’s municipal elections in Paraguay may still be months away but the crisis affecting the Asunción municipal government means that the battle for control of the capital has already started. The crisis prompted the resignation of the elected mayor, and the nationally ruling Asociación Nacional Republicana-Partido Colorado (ANR-PC) is keen to regain control of the seat it lost in the last election. But the competition for filling the second most important elected post in the country is threatening to deepen the rift in the ANR-PC that has already created so many governability problems for the government led by President Mario Abdo Benítez.
