PANAMA: Seeking to address a major priority

Addressing the weakness of the judiciary, which like Panama’s other institutions has been hit by scandal in recent years, was a declared priority for President Laurentino Cortizo whose Partido Revolucionario Democrático (PRD) government took office for a five-year term in July 2019. So far he is pointing to the approval of three new justices for the nine-member supreme court (CSJ) and a new attorney general (AG) selected through new, more rigorous processes, as a sign that he is moving on this pledge.
