Homicide data underlines failure of security strategy
Official homicide data shows that 2019 was on course to become the most violent year in Mexico since records began in 1997. This represents a clear failure of the national security strategy adopted by the government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. According to López Obrador, the main security objective of his administration is to reduce the high levels of violence linked to drug trafficking activity. To achieve this the government has adopted a new security strategy based on increasing the presence of the security forces around the country to reinforce public security but avoiding direct confrontation with drug trafficking organisations (DTOs). López Obrador said that ending the so-called ‘war on the DTOs’ would help lower the homicide rate and promised that this would become evident in the first year of his administration. But the data shows otherwise.
