Francisco Javier García has said that the country received a total of 45.2m tourists between 2012-2019, with average annual growth of 5.0%. This generated US$43bn over the whole period. However tourism revenue in 2019 was down 1.2% compared with 2018 to reach US$7.5bn as a result of what the DR authorities describe as a
“smear campaign” by international media due to the deaths of a dozen US tourists last year, the causes of which the DR authorities maintain were natural. According to official figures, in 2019, the arrival of tourists to the DR via air was down 1.9% on 2018, to reach 6.4m.
