VENEZUELA: Increasing desperation for sanctions dialogue

At the annual opening session of the supreme court (TSJ) on 31 January, Venezuela’s de facto president Nicolás Maduro commented that “it is time to accept that there are things here that do not work, not because of [US President Donald] Trump, but because of us”. Maduro was referring primarily to the Venezuelan judicial system, and attributing blame to the country as a whole rather than his government in particular – but such a statement would nonetheless have seemed impossible just months ago, and is the latest indication of his desire to start a dialogue that might end the sanctions that are weighing down the Venezuelan economy.
