In brief: Brazil’s 2019 retail trade increases but slows

* Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the latest figures for retail trade, which show a slight dip in retail in December 2019. Retail sales fell 0.1% in December 2019 compared with November 2019 but grew 2.6% compared with December 2018. Despite the dip in December, which interrupted seven consecutive months of increases in retail sales, retail trade grew 1.8% in 2019, compared with 2018. This is the third consecutive year that the retail sector has expanded in Brazil, after the economic crisis of 2015-2016, although 2019 results represent a slight slowdown in the pace of expansion, after 2.3% and 2.1% increases in retail sales in 2018 and 2017, respectively.
