As part of plans to improve the provision of justice in Mexico, Attorney General Alejandro Gertz Manero has proposed eliminating the crime of ‘femicide’ (the murder of females on account of their gender) from the federal penal code. Gertz argues that this will help to facilitate the work of prosecutors and lead to higher conviction rates for murder cases, including those involving female victims, which in turn would help to more effectively deter the killing of individuals.
