COSTA RICA-PANAMA | Drug-gang violence spreads. On 30 January five bodies of men with their hands bound and shot through the head were found neatly lined side by side on a refuse tip outside Ciudad Neilly, in the southern province of Puntarenas, about 300 kilometres east of San José and 30km from the Panamanian border. The police were alerted by an anonymous telephone call, apparently made by the killers, intent on publicising their deed. The authorities promptly identified all the victims as Panamanians, but did not release their names. However, a Panamanian police sublieutenant told the media that one of the deceased was his brother.
