BOLIVIA: UN rapporteur warns of judicial persecution

Diego García-Sayán, the United Nations (UN) special rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers, voiced concern on 6 February over “the use of judicial and fiscal institutions for the purpose of political persecution” in Bolivia. His criticisms will reinforce the accusations made by the Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) that the interim government led by Jeanine Áñez - herself a presidential candidate - poses a threat to judicial independence and risks undermining the legitimacy of upcoming elections.
