Introduction

Since assuming the presidency of Costa Rica in May 2018, Carlos Alvarado and the centre-left ruling Partido Acción Ciudadana (PAC) have overseen promising improvements in public security. This has been marked in particular by a continuing fall in homicides, which totalled 560 in 2019, down from 585 in 2018. The first piece in this February edition of Latin American Regional Report: Caribbean & Central America considers these achievements and potential challenges ahead.
