EL SALVADOR: Bukele hails further fall in homicides

El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele began 2020 by trumpeting a dramatic reduction in homicides since taking office for a five-year term in June 2019. He said that with just 120 murders, December 2019 was El Salvador’s most peaceful month since 1992, the end of the 12-year civil war. While the fall in homicides has been well received by various sectors, some human rights organisations like the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) have nonetheless flagged up aspects of his government’s security policy as cause for concern.
