MEXICO: Extraditions to the US continue

Rubén ‘El Menchito’ Oseguera González has become the latest prominent drug trafficker to be extradited by Mexico to the US. His extradition suggests that cooperation between the Mexican and US governments in combating transnational drug trafficking organisations (DTOs) remains strong despite the change in government in Mexico. The previous Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) administration led by Enrique Peña Nieto (2012-2018) closely cooperated with the US on security issues, which led to the capture and extradition of major Mexican criminals to the US. There were concerns that this could change under the Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. But it appears that these concerns were unfounded and that close bilateral cooperation will continue even if this leaves the López Obrador administration open to criticism at home.
