Guatemala’s Giammattei ignores US calls to veto bill

Colombia: On 2 March Colombia’s President Iván Duque paid a visit to Washington DC, where he met US President Donald Trump. According to a press release by Colombia’s office of the presidency, the two highlighted the joint work of both countries in “the defence of democracy and the fight against drugs”. As well as the meeting with Trump, in which the US president was uncompromising in his insistence on the need for aerial spraying to control drug production in Colombia, President Duque also spoke at the policy conference of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (Aipac), a bipartisan lobbying group, and attended a conference held by the Business Council for International Understanding (BCIU), a US-based organisation that works to expand international trade and commerce. Duque also signed an agreement with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to diversify and “internationalise” the Colombian economy.
