GUYANA: Electoral uncertainty fuels tensions

Guyana’s President David Granger addressed the nation on 9 March to appeal for calm one week on from general elections. A day earlier a teenager was shot dead during protests staged by the main opposition People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) amid heightened tensions over delayed results and accusations of electoral fraud. The acting chief justice, Roxane George-Wiltshire, upheld an injunction filed by a member of the PPP/C blocking the Guyana Elections Commission (Gecom) from proclaiming a victor and, on 11 March, she declared null and void the declaration of a result in the country’s largest electoral district due to procedural irregularities.
