US law enforcement has landed “the single largest strike” against the Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG), Mexico’s most powerful drug trafficking organisation (DTO). Hundreds of suspected CJNG members have been arrested in the US as part of an operation targeting the organisation dubbed ‘Project Python’. This is part of efforts by the US to dismantle the DTO by systematically attacking its organisational structure in order to ‘strangle’ the life out of it. The hope is that this new strategy will be more successful than the simple ‘decapitation’ strategy that the US and Mexico have employed in the past to combat DTOs.
