COLOMBIA: Associates of the paramilitary gain respite

President Álvaro Uribe is gambling that his current high popularity rating will neutralise the criticism attracted by two recent decisions many have interpreted as likely to abort attempts to rid the body politic of the deeply infiltrated allies of paramilitary organisations. In mid-May he suddenly extradited 14 paramilitary bosses to the US; less than a month later he killed off his own government's bill designed to purge congress of legislators linked to paramilitary organisations.
