NICARAGUA-REGION: Bucking the trend

With governments across Central America imposing increasingly stringent controls as part of efforts to curb the spread of coronavirus (Covid-19) [WR-20-11], Nicaragua, which has so far registered two cases, would appear the exception. In an open letter directed to Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), and Carissa F Etienne, the director of the Pan-American Health Organisation (PAHO), the opposition grouping Coalición Nacional expressed “extreme concern” about the way that the government led by President Daniel Ortega is handling the pandemic as well as the lack of transparency and information surrounding its response. These concerns have also been echoed by the private sector and the Catholic Church as well as the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR).
