Migrants pay the price for security shortcomings

As governments across the Andean region have increasingly demonstrated a willingness to scapegoat Venezuelan migrants for problems of crime and insecurity, the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic threatens to add to this rising tide of xenophobia. Border closures and states of emergency are causing problems for migrants across the globe, but the context of increasingly repressive migration regimes in the Andean region could deliver particular challenges for over 3m Venezuelans living in Colombia, Peru, and Ecuador.
