Despite the unilateral ceasefire declared by the Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN), in place since 1 April, the outlook for a reduction in violence in Colombia is not encouraging. The coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic has interrupted ‘politics as usual’ in Colombia, but it does not as yet show any signs of interrupting ‘violence as usual’. With much of the population in lockdown and a major recession in the making, there are calls for greater political unity.
