PERU: Uncertain prospects for primary elections

While Peru’s President Martín Vizcarra has voiced optimism that the country’s general elections scheduled for April 2021 will not be unduly affected by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, the fate of the party primaries, due to be held later this year, remains unclear. With Vizcarra reiterating his commitment not to run for election in 2021, the selection of candidates is likely to be fiercely contested, and there are concerns in some quarters that quarantine restrictions could be used to undermine the democratic and representative nature of this process.
