MEXICO: Action as violence turns both massive and indiscriminate

In September Mexico has undergone one of the worst multiple killings in more than a decade, as well as a chilling twist in the violence unleashed by the drug gangs: the first-ever indiscriminate attack on the public. Towards the end of the month, the death toll attributed to the drug-gang wars had shot above 3,200 - almost a fifth higher than that for the whole of last year. On the other hand, the massive groundswell of public indignation at the impunity of criminals has spurred the federal and state governments into more energetic action against kidnapping, which has led to the disruption of nine gangs of kidnappers.
