BRAZIL: Illegal phone-tapping 'targeted Lula and supreme court'

August ended with the sudden mushrooming of the illegal phone bugging scandal that a congressional committee has been investigating for several months. The upper echelons of the state intelligence agency, Abin, were suspended after newsmagazine Veja reported that the telephone interceptions went much further than had previously been thought, and that among the conversations recorded were at least one involving President Lula da Silva and another involving the president of the supreme court.
