PANAMA | Biggest mine closes. On 6 April the government led by President Laurentino Cortizo announced the closure of Panama’s biggest mine, Cobre Panama. Having ordered a national quarantine on 25 March to stop the spread of coronavirus (Covid-19), the Cortizo government had faced pressure from unions to shut down the mine since March after the first Covid-19 case was confirmed among its employees. The government bowed to the pressure following the death of a mine worker on 4 April as a result of Covid-19.
