VENEZUELA: Maduro rolls the dice in oil sector

The appointment of Tareck El Aissami as Venezuela’s new oil minister elicited a strong reaction from opponents of Nicolás Maduro’s government. Juan Guaidó questioned “what company or bank is going to trust an institution run by someone accused of drug trafficking and corruption”, in reference to long-running US investigations into the former vice president (2017-2018) and the US$10m reward for information leading to his arrest, issued in March, which is second only to the US$15m offered for Maduro. Michael Kozak, the US Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, warned that El Aissami would bring “more of the same mismanagement and corruption” to Venezuela’s oil sector, at a time of crisis [WR-20-16].
