GUATEMALA: Giammattei marks first 100 days

Guatemala’s President Alejandro Giammattei has delivered a balance sheet on his first 100 days in office. With much of his mandate already overshadowed by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, Giammattei’s speech highlighted efforts by his government to fight the disease. These have been called into question, however, by the human rights ombudsman (PDDH), Jordán Rodas, who days earlier had called for the health minister, Hugo Monroy, to resign, citing government incompetence. The discovery of a corruption network in the health ministry illustrates other challenges facing the new president, both in terms of addressing the pandemic as well as more long-running concerns about institutional corruption.
