CHILE: Piñera inflames tensions

Chile’s President Sebastián Piñera suggested this week that an impending recession associated with the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic might make it necessary to re-evaluate holding a plebiscite on reforming the constitution in October. Piñera’s comments, in an interview on 26 April, were roundly rejected by the political opposition and even appeared to catch off-guard some of the leaders in his ruling right-of-centre Chile Vamos coalition.
