Future of state-owned companies up for debate

The great symbolic gesture of the start of the administration of former president Evo Morales (2006-2019) back in 2006 was the 1 May nationalisation of Bolivia’s oil and gas reserves, which had been sold into private ownership in 1996. Now, after Morales’s resignation following the disputed October 2019 general election, there are accusations that the interim government led by Jeanine Áñez is looking to privatise a host of state-owned companies, including oil and gas company Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales Bolivianos (YPFB), and the national airline Boliviana de Aviación (BoA).
