In February, US President Donald Trump said that the US will enter into trade agreement negotiations with Ecuador, during a joint press conference in Washington DC with his Ecuadorean counterpart, President Lenín Moreno. While the announcement represented a success for the Moreno administration, talks will be politically difficult in light of the tough requirements that the US is expected to demand. Moreover, in light of the disruption caused by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, this process is unlikely to be concluded during Moreno’s term, set to end in 2021.
