The role of renewables in the crisis

One effect of the crisis has been to suspend or delay work on the existing pipeline of renewable energy projects. In Brazil on 18 March Energy Minister Bento Albuquerque, who had himself tested positive for Covid-19, said the upcoming A-4 and A-6 renewable energy auctions were being “indefinitely postponed”. The A-4 auctions are for four-year renewables-only power purchase agreements (PPAs), while the A-6 auctions are for six-year PPAs open to non-renewable sources. The move came after a total of nearly 800 solar projects, 660 wind projects, and 60 biomass and small hydro projects had registered for the A-4 auctions, representing around 50 GW of total capacity. The plan had been to hold an A-4 auction at the end of May, followed by an A-6 round in the second half of the year, a pattern that would repeat in 2021. When auctions will restart is now uncertain.
